Catering Price Per Pax in KL & Selangor, September 2026

Key findings

• Buffet prices vary the most. The middle half of caterers charge RM 41.45 to RM 64.90 per pax, while their cheapest menus have a median of RM 32.
• Wedding and kenduri packages cost less per head than buffets (RM 23 against RM 45), but the median minimum is 100 guests.
• 9 of the 15 caterers that state a buffet minimum need 50 guests or more, and 4 need 100.
• Meal boxes suit small groups: 4 of the 11 bento caterers that state a minimum take orders as small as 10 people.
• 24 of the 31 caterers we checked do not say whether prices include SST. Caterers registered for service tax add 6%.
• Only 8 of 31 caterers publish a delivery or transport charge. The lowest charge each one lists runs from RM 30 to RM 200, with a median of RM 52.50.
• The median deposit is 50% of the bill. 2 of the 10 caterers that state a deposit want full payment before the event.
• 6 of 31 caterers show evidence of JAKIM halal certification. Another 11 describe their food as halal without showing a certificate.
• 33 of the 70 caterer websites we screened show no per-pax price in the page text.

Catering price per pax by format

A caterer's typical price is the median of the per-pax prices it publishes for a format, and its entry price is its cheapest. The table shows the median across caterers and the range covered by the middle half of them.

Ringgit per pax as published, before delivery, service charges and SST. The GatherPlate column is the median of current listings and changes as vendors update their menus.

What a catered event costs

Typical totals multiply the typical price per pax by the guest count. Entry totals use caterers' cheapest menus. Per-pax prices often fall for bigger groups, so large events can come in lower.

A caterer registered for service tax adds 6%: the RM 4,500 buffet for 100 becomes RM 4,770. Delivery or transport starts at RM 30 to RM 200, depending on the caterer. The last column counts caterers whose stated minimum order fits the event.

Median 5 days, from 1 to 180 days, among the 16 caterers that state one.

SST

7 of 31 caterers say their prices exclude SST, and 24 do not mention it. Caterers registered for service tax charge 6% on food and beverage services (Royal Malaysian Customs FAQ).

Cancellation and refunds

10 of 31 caterers publish their cancellation, deposit refund or date change terms.

Halal claims and certification

What the 31 caterers we checked say about halal, as of 24 September 2026:

A halal claim without a certificate is not necessarily false: some certified caterers simply do not show it. If your event needs certification, check the certificate in JAKIM's directory before you book.

A name search for “catering” in JAKIM's halal directory on 24 September 2026 returned 15 certified premises in Selangor, 8 in Kuala Lumpur and 77 nationwide. It only matches names containing the word, so the real number of certified caterers is higher.

Lok lok catering prices

None of the 70 caterer websites we screened published a current lok lok package price. The only lok lok price we found, RM 1,000, was on an outdated page. These are the lok lok packages listed on GatherPlate today.

How we collected the data

1. We screened 70 caterer websites serving Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, found through web searches for catering prices and from caterers we already knew. 33 showed no per-pax price in their page text: they quote on request, price whole packages or publish menus as images.
2. On each site we read the home page, up to ten pages about prices, menus or packages, and any linked PDF menus.
3. We checked 34 websites from 31 businesses by hand, sorting every price by format and noting minimum orders, delivery fees, deposits, notice periods, SST wording, cancellation terms and halal claims. Sites whose price pages were clearly out of date were left out.
4. Each caterer counts once per format, so a long menu does not outweigh a short one. Websites run by the same business are counted as one caterer. Market figures are the median and quartiles of the caterers' typical prices.
5. Formats with fewer than eight caterers publishing prices, such as canapés, BBQ, desserts and drinks, are left out. Prices outside RM3 to RM500 per pax are treated as errors.

These are advertised list prices from caterers that publish them online. Sites were chosen for relevance rather than at random, and many smaller caterers only quote through WhatsApp or social media, so treat the figures as a benchmark of published prices rather than a census. Final quotes change with menu choices, guest count, transport, staffing and SST.
