Booking a Halal Lok Lok Truck for a Private Event Shouldn't Take 4 Hours
A client needed a muslim-friendly lok lok truck and our own vendor was booked that day. So we messaged 13 others in one morning. Here is what came back, and why none of it should be necessary.

Last week a corporate client asked us to find them a halal, or at least muslim-friendly, lok lok truck for a private company event. We already have a lok lok vendor on GatherPlate, so this should have been a two-minute job. It wasn't. Our vendor was fully booked on their date.
So we did what anyone planning an event in Malaysia does. We searched online, collected every lok lok number we could find and started messaging. By the end of the morning we had reached out to 13 vendors.
Every chat started the same way
Date? Pax? Let me check and revert. That was the opening of almost every conversation. Fair questions, but you answer them 13 times over, and you still can't get a price until each vendor gets back to you. Here is what we got back:
- Replies that took a few hours to arrive
- Menus, but no prices
- Some replies three days later, long after we had booked someone else
- Not one upfront quotation out of 13
Keep in mind this was our own team doing the chasing. Talking to F&B vendors is literally our job. If it took us a whole morning, imagine doing it between meetings.
Four hours for two answers
We did settle it. We found a vendor who was free on the client's date and got the booking done. Start to finish, four hours.
All of that to answer two things: who is free on my date, and how much will it cost for my pax. On GatherPlate that takes under two minutes, because both answers are already on the page before you ask.
Booking over WhatsApp anyway? Ask for a written quote for your exact pax before you commit to anything. A price that only shows up at the last minute leaves you no time to compare.
The vendors aren't the problem
When your message lands, the vendor might be prepping skewers, driving the truck or halfway through someone else's event. Slow replies are what you get when the people cooking are also the people answering the phone. What actually helps is putting dates and prices somewhere customers can see them without asking.
What happened next
We went back to the vendor who took the booking and asked them to join GatherPlate. They are being onboarded now, so soon you will be able to see their dates and packages without messaging anyone.

Not automatically. It depends on the vendor, so ask each one directly about their halal status and get it in writing if your event needs that assurance.
How early should I book a lok lok truck?
As soon as your event date is fixed. Each vendor only has so many trucks, so the earlier you check, the more choice you have.
Why won't lok lok vendors give a price upfront?
Because their price depends on your date and pax count, so they ask for those before quoting. In our experience the quote can then take anywhere from a few hours to three days to arrive.
