Kids Party Catering in KL: Portions, Timing and What Actually Gets Eaten
Children eat less than you plan for and the adults who bring them eat more. Here is how to size a kids party order, when to serve it, and which food survives two hours of a room full of six-year-olds.

Every kids party order has the same two mistakes in it. The first is ordering child-sized portions for a guest list that is half adults. The second is putting the food out at the start, when nobody is hungry and everybody is running.
Fix those two and the rest of the menu barely matters.
Count the adults separately
Twenty children on the invitation is rarely twenty people in the room. Younger children arrive with a parent who stays, and depending on the age group that can nearly double your headcount, with the added twist that the adults will eat properly while the children graze.
- Ask on the invitation whether a parent is staying, and give a deadline for the answer
- Assume younger age groups bring a staying adult and older ones get dropped off
- Count siblings, because they come along and they eat
- Order adult food as a real portion, not as leftovers from the kids menu
Headcount drives price more than the menu does. Minimums and setup costs are fixed, so feeding twenty often costs nearly as much as feeding thirty. If your number is borderline, it is usually worth confirming upward rather than ordering twice.
Here is what that does to the bill. Twenty children, 15 parents who stay and four siblings is 39 portions, not 20. At RM13.90 a head that is RM542.10, against RM278 for the number on the invitation.
What children actually eat
Children at a party are not there to eat. They are there to run around with their friends, and food is an interruption. What gets finished is almost always the same shape: small, recognisable, eaten with one hand, and requiring no decisions.
- Small portions beat big ones, because a full plate gets abandoned
- Familiar beats interesting, every time
- Anything needing a knife and fork will sit there untouched
- Finger food is the format the whole event wants to be
The adults are the ones who will appreciate a proper spread. That is where a buffet or a set of packed meals earns its place, sized for the grown-ups and shared down to the children who want it.
Ask about allergies before you order, not on the day
This is the one part of a kids party where being relaxed is not an option. Nut, egg, dairy and seafood allergies are common enough in any group of twenty children that you should assume you have at least one, and a parent who told you three weeks ago will still expect you to have remembered.
Put one question on the invitation: "Does your child have any food allergies?" Then pass every answer to the caterer in writing, and keep the allergen-free items on a separate labelled plate rather than mixed into a shared tray.
Halal is the safe default for most Malaysian guest lists, so settle it before you collect quotes rather than after. You can filter for halal caterers directly rather than checking vendor by vendor, and ask each one what they can show you about their halal status.
Serve late, and put the cake where you can see it
Food at the start of a party gets ignored. Children arrive excited, and they will not stop to eat until the first burst of energy has worn off. Serving roughly partway through the party catches them when they are actually hungry, and it gives latecomers time to arrive.
- Drinks and light snacks available from the start, low and reachable
- Main food once the room has settled and everyone has arrived
- Cake near the end, because it is the signal the party is wrapping up
- Ice cream or a dessert station last, if you are doing one
Cutting the cake early tells children the party is over, and you will spend the next hour explaining that it is not.
Formats that survive a room full of children
An open buffet at child height is an open invitation. Anything reachable gets touched, and a shared tray that twenty children have picked through is not a tray you want to offer the adults afterwards.
- Individually packed boxes stop the shared-tray problem entirely and make allergy portions easy to label
- A served cart or pop-up stall puts an adult between the children and the food, which is usually worth it
- Keep the food table at adult height and hand things down
- Have somewhere to put wrappers before the wrappers find the floor

Frequently asked questions
How much food should I order for a kids party?
Size the order around the adults, not the children. Children graze and leave full plates, while the parents who stay will eat a proper portion. Count staying parents and siblings as full guests and treat the children's food as smaller, simpler items on top.
When should I serve food at a children's party?
Partway through rather than at the start. Children arrive too excited to eat, and food put out early gets ignored and picked at. Serving once everyone has arrived and the first burst of energy has passed means it actually gets eaten.
How do I handle food allergies at a kids party?
Ask on the invitation, pass every answer to the caterer in writing, and keep allergen-free food on a separate labelled plate rather than mixed into a shared tray. Individually packed boxes make this considerably easier than a buffet does.
Is a buffet or packed boxes better for a kids party?
Packed boxes usually win. They stop children picking through shared trays, they make allergy portions easy to label, and they remove the queue. A buffet works better when the guest list is mostly adults and there is space to keep the table out of reach.
How much does kids party catering cost in KL?
Most meal boxes are advertised at about RM14 to RM20 per pax, and buffets cost more, with a median of RM45 per pax in the September 2026 price index. Flat-rate packages such as lok lok start at RM950 for 30 to 40 guests on GatherPlate. The index figures exclude delivery and SST.
